Gold Country Kennel is located in Northern California Sierra Foothill’s Gold Country. We are a small family-owned kennel where our dogs are more than pets, they are part of our family. In keeping a small number of dogs, we are able to dedicate the time needed to give each dog the love and individual attention they deserve. We are truly dedicated to our dogs’ needs and well-being.
WHAT DO WE OFFER?
Straight Back Old World GSD Breeding
We breed old-style German Shepherds also known as “Straight Back Old World GSD, Old Time GSD, and German Shepherds of the old German/American Lines.” This breed of GSD tend to be larger in size then the traditional GSD, have level top lines and straight backs. They have excellent temperaments, are very easy-to-train and always extremely loyal to their owners. These dogs excel as family dogs, wonderful companions, therapy dogs, service dogs and SAR. (they are not bred for show.)
A combined 83 years of knowledge and experience in genetics, veterinary medicine, and training has been dedicated into developing this line of large AKC German Shepherd Dogs. This collaboration has produced healthy quality dogs with excellent temperament, highly trainable, loyal to their owners and wonderful family pets.
An outstanding breeder who has 40 years of experience in the development of this magnificent line is my mentor, Julie Walsh. Julie has dedicated a lifetime to perfecting the GSD; her dogs are testimony to that dedication. Julie’s main goal is to bring back the type of GSD she grew up with: the large straight back, excellent temperament GSD.
I personally refer to these dogs as the “Gentle Giants of the GSD Breed.” With Julie’s blessing and guidance, our family at Gold Country Kennel is proud to introduce this magnificent breed of Old World German Shepherds to the West Coast.
Say Hello to Iorek II, Lyra and Khalessi
Our Boy: Iorek II is a 130+lb solid large-boned two-year-old GSD with a long black, tan and orange coat. His mellow temperament and affectionate disposition is displayed in his love to snuggle and cuddle. Due to his size, we call him our “Gentle Giant.” Gentle yes, but he is also very protective if need be. Iorek is Penn Hip/OFA certified and will be bred to Khalessi in the spring of 2025.
Our Girls: Khalessi is the baby of our kennel. She is a black and tan long coat, large-boned female, is two-years-old and weighs in at 115+ lbs and still growing. She has an extremely gentle touch, is quick to learn and responds well to commands. Khalessi will be added to our breeding program in spring of 2025.
Our girl Lyra is a black, tan and cream fluff coat GSD. She is two-years-old and currently weighs in at 100+ lbs of pure love. She is very gentle as well as protective. As the kennel’s alpha dog, Lyra is an extremely alert watch dog. She is currently being considered for Search & Rescue training and not currently part of our breeding program.
Our Inspiration
Iorek I was our initial experience and introduction to “Old World Shepherds GSD.” His loyalty, temperament and dedication to our family is the inspiration for Gold Country Kennel. Iorek was 12-years-old when he passed and the most amazing GSD we had the pleasure to raise. We are excited to introduce this lineage of AKC, GSD to the West Coast.
